Editor's Notes

I don't recall seeing any of my classmates smoking while in high school. So it was somewhat of a surprise to see the results of a "smoking survey" we did in November of 1970 as part of our "Anti-Smoking Issue" of the Forsan Stampede.

Smoking Survey

Volume 6 / Number 6
November 6, 1970

The following report concerns the smoking situation in our high school. The information is derived from the questionaires we distributed a while back. On the questionaire, we asked questions such as: "Do you smoke at the present?", "Have you ever smoked?", "How much?", "Why do you smoke?", and other questions which we felt might give us a picture of what relation smoking has to the different class levels.

Senior Class

Of 25 of our seniors surveyed, six smoke now and eight have smoked. The seniors gave reasons such as nerves, and the fact that they thought smoking to be refreshing and enjoyable. Three of the seniors at Forsan said they smoke one pack of cigarettes per day or less. One person smokes five packs a day and another three.

When asked if they would like to stop smoking, two of the seniors said yes and four said no. Only two of the students feared that smoking would affect their health. Two of the students did not believe that they could stop smoking even if they wanted to, but four thought they could. However, only three of the smokers would definitely recommend smoking to nonsmokers. Two of the students surveyed would not recommend smoking at all and one person said it depended on the individual.
