Editor's Notes

In the fall of 1970, the school board of Forsan High School dropped it's dress code. This was big news at the time. Of course, wearing a shirt with it's tails not tucked in was pretty radical back then!

I remember for that week's issue of The Stampede we devoted nearly three pages to the dress code revelation. The article here was an editorial from a senior's point of view.

Students Speak

Quotes From High Schoolers When Asked:

"How do you feel about not having a dress code this year?"

"I'm glad we don't have one - - - that way I can go barefooted."

Bruce Myers

"It's a good idea, 'cause everyone else can express their own opinions about how people should dress."

Will Morgan

"Nobody should tell you what you can wear and what you can't wear."

Lori Hampton

"People express themselves in the clothes they wear, and no should tell them what to wear."

Consider
Ourselves
Lucky!

Volume 6 / Number 4
October 9, 1970

Forsan High's student body has been given the opportunity to dress each according to his own.

Today's girl has the opportunity to wear the long, short, and in-between. The pant suits are bringing forth both dress and pants in one.

The young men are wearing bell bottom pants, Tone Jones shirts, loud colors, and hair as long as they please. They say fashion shows individualism.

One might ask how can a school set up a list of dress regulations. We, the student body, spend close to eight hours a day under school supervision. That's some reason in itself.

Without some kind of regulations, there would be no kind of control over the student body. We should consider ourselfs lucky because we are given some freedom in our dress. Some schools tell students how to dress and wear their hair - - it should take an individual to choose his way of dress, not the school.

So as long as we don't abuse the privilage of dress that has been given to us this year, we might always be classified as responsible young citizens.
