What Was On TV
in 1971?
|
|
|
Gunsmoke
During our senior year, many of us liked westerns on television. In those days there were several on each week.
I remember watching "Gunsmoke" every Monday evening on CBS. In 1971, it was nearing the end of its unprecedented twenty season run.

|
Mission: Impossible
This popular action series was in its sixth season when the Class of 1971 was finishing high school.
I think it's ironic that "Mission Impossible" returned to the Big Screen in time for our 25th reunion.

|
|
The Mary Tyler Moore Show
This sitcom about a single woman in the big city was a TV hit during our senior year.
|
|
|
The Brady Bunch
Who could forget the Brady Bunch?
This family sitcom was extremely popular when I was in high school. Like "Mission Impossible", this TV series resurfaced as a big screen feature in time for our 25th reunion.

It just wouldn't be television without the commercials, right?
I don't believe they aired as many minutes of commercial each hour as they do today, but there were some memorable ones.
In 1971, McDonalds was a major advertiser. It was during our senior year they coined the phrase "you deserve a break today ..."

Remember Mikey? Mikey won't like this cereal.
But he liked the cereal and the commercial became one of the all time classics.
A short time ago, I believe they brought the adult Mikey back for a sequel to his 1971 commercial.

Mixed in with all the TV ads for fast food, cereal, and all the usual stuff, there were public service announcements.
One in particular stands out from 1971. It's a public service announcement for keeping our world clean. It featured an Indian who looked down at how mankind had spoiled the countryside and shed a tear.
Unforgettable.
