What do I remember about first grade?
It's been so long that it's hazy, of course. Yet when I revisit those days in the pages of our school yearbook from 1960, I always get a warm feeling inside.
A few memories that I can conjure up include:
- Catching a baby jack rabbit that ran out of the cottonfields surrounding the school and onto the playground. Thirty six years later I turned that adventure into a bedtime story for my grandson Vincent.
- Wondering why classmate Johnny Velasquez was out of school so much. I learned later that his parents were migrant farm workers and he was pulled from school to harvest cotton.
- Bringing a nickel to school each day for an extra carton of milk during breaktime.
