Class of 1956 History

Our class got off to a good start when six little snaggled-toothed children started to school in the first grade with Mrs. Clark as the teacher. Two little girls who were almost identical were blonde-headed, freckled-faced and chubby. You would not be able to recognize them by this description, today, except for Lovelle's freckles and Mary Lou's blonde hair. Everyone says that Patsy was very different from these two. She was snaggled~toothed, freckled-faced, and skinny. Her hair was coal black, and her complexion was dark. Markettia was a tall blonde with pig-tails. Shirley was another of these who wore glasses, and was tall and skinny. She looked very much like a scholar.

In the second grade, with Mrs. Holladay as the teacher, a little blonde head who wore her hair in French-braids was welcomed by our class. She was short and chubby and everyone knows her as Barbara Dean.

When we entered the third grade, Bobbie Ruth, Bobby, Lonnie, Martha, Leroy, and Doris joined us. Mrs. Whittenburg was our teacher that year.

No additions were made when we were in the fourth or fifth grades, but our teachers those years were Mrs. Cathcart and Mrs. Honeycutt.

In the sixth grade, with Mrs. Bailey as our teacher, Jerry Lynn and Sherman joined us. Jerry was a very small girl with blue eyes and brown hair, and Sherman had blue eyes and black hair.

When we were in the seventh grade, Jesse Kirk started to school here, but moved to Oklahoma at the end of the first semester. Our teachers were Mrs. Conger, Mr. Coffman, and Mrs. Bishop.

In the eighth grade, there were seven new students although three of them checked out: Betty Long, Moveta Law, and Martha Hitchcock left, while J, W, Chatham, Mike Sweeney, and Claudette Moore started to school here at the first of the year and Larry Furse joined us later. Mr. Gatewood, Mrs. Mobley, Mrs. Wiss, Mr. Honeycutt, and Miss Sullivan were our teachers.

Our freshman year, Mike Sweeney moved away to Odessa and we gained Margaret Box. Bobbie Henderson moved to New Mexico.

Our sophomore class welcomed two new students whom you all know very well. The girl was tall, brown-haired, and a comic. The boy was brown haired and a comic as well. These two are Mary Gaskins and James Buchanan.

At the beginning of our junior year we gained John Ratliff and Bobbie Ruth came back to join the fun.

This year we lost Claudette, Markettta, Doris, Barbara, and Margaret, but we are looking forward to the graduation for the nine of us that are left with much hope for the future.
