![]() Dear Forsan Ex-Student: Well, here we go with an attempt to put together our second newsletter.. again for the same reasons as our first publication in 1993, i.e., to keep stirring up interest in the Forsan Ex-Student All Class Reunion, and to help us keep in touch with each other. One big difference this time around is we have mailing addresses for twice as many ex-students as we did in 1993, so we're making progress! Even so, we still have a long way to go. So please pass a copy of this on to anyone you suspect did not get one, and have them furnish us their mailing address. Our mailing addresses are:
Leon Calley
Boyce Hale
Darnell Peacock Also, thanks so much for your responses to the questionnaire which was sent out before and also made available at the 1994 reunion. The information furnished was very helpful.
1994 EX-STUDENT REUNION It seemed to us that just about everyone had a real good time when we last got together on August 6, 1994. There were about 240 of us in attendance and there was a lot of good food. One of the highlights was the induction into the Hall of Honor three outstanding individuals who had been associated with FHS - Clarie Conger, L. L. Martin and LaVoice (Bossy) Scudday. Mrs. Conger, an unforgettable and most deserving former teacher, was there in person to be inducted. We are sorry to report that she passed away September 2, 1995. New officers elected were Leon Calley, President; Patsy Reed Fryer and Dorothy Gresseft Pye, Vice-Presidents; and Boyce Hale, Secretary-Treasurer. Several attendees could be overheard talking about how they arrived a day early and took a drive over their old stomping grounds, and how there was nothing there except some old foundations, e.g., where the Phillips, Continental, Sun-Ray, Shell, Royal, Magnolia or other oil camps used to be. Many old stories were overheard, especially from some of the "oldtimers." You may remember G. D. Kennedy, a former Superintendent. He told about the time when they had been unable to get several skunks out from under the old school building (late '40s). Finally, he backed one of the school busses up, pointing the exhaust pipe underneath the building, and poured a can of "Casite" in the carburetor and smoked them out. He also told about going on a senior trip to Big Bend, and how he took three of the boys for a walk and they got lost. The boys came straggling in about dark, and one of the boys was so thirsty his tongue was swollen. Many more stories, but too little space to tell them... SPECIAL RECOGNITION Several individuals over the years have contributed to making Forsan a pleasant memory in the minds of so many of us. In this newsletter we would like to recognize one of the real special contributors to Forsan's memorable history. C.V. Wash, born in 1910 in Richland Springs, still lives on his ranch just a couple of miles out of Forsan with his wife Mae. C. V. recalls making his first trip to Forsan with his Dad in about 1926. They traveled in a Model T Ford over a dirt road known as Highway No. 9 (now 87) to get there. There was very little drilling activity around Forsan back then, so, after finding no work they went on to Crane. In late 1928 C. V. returned to Forsan. He and Mae married in 1929. They later had 3 sons: Bobby, Charles and Danny. He worked for Humble Oil and Refining until 1933. C. V. and Mae then bought the grocery store in Forsan in 1933, which they continued to operate until 1942. He then began contracting for Humble and established Forsan Oil Well Service. This was during WWII. From its origin until it was sold in 1979, seems like just about everyone around worked for Forsan Oil Well Service at one time or another. During this period of time C. V. and Mae have made innumerable contributions to Forsan and the community around it. They have served in the school, church and many other areas. The family continues to operate Forsan Oil Company, an oil production business. =Insert PicturePicture above: 1 st and 2nd Grade at Otis Chalk School (some of whom would later be in the FHS Classes of '44 and '45). Left to right from top row: Mrs. Spratt, Louise Craft, R.H. Jones, Harley Grant, John (Sonny) Cole, Lucy Hurley, C.D. Dobson, Mary Nell Stephen, Peggy Jo Hargrove, Joan Moore, Laura Mae Willis, Fredda Nell Oglesby, Glenn Smith, Patricia Knight, Francis Moody and Frances Neill. (Thanks to Laura Mae Willis Sypult for picture and names.) FEATURE We couldn't resist doing a little article on those amazing Sewell gals. I think most of them made the last reunion. They say they celebrate their "Sometimes Annual Sisters Reunion" in Texas every year or so. (By the way, they do have a brother, Calvin, who retired from Shell and lives in Hamlin. He is an ace fisherman and is married to Bertie.) Juanita '43 and her husband C.L. Fisher are retired and live in Lubbock. The Lion's Club has taken them to Hong Kong and less exotic ports. Vonnie (last year '44) and husband Fred Andrews retired from Phillips Petroleum and live in Midland. They stay busy with volunteer work and family and friends. Joyce '46 and her husband Joseph Wisthoff live in Crown Point, Indiana. She is in real estate and he restores antique clocks. Billie '50 and her husband "Big Buff Back" Bob Baker '51 live in Garland, where he works in a warehouse and their children live nearby. Becca '53 and her husband Ben Tindall are in Germantown, Maryland for a record 10 years now. Ben, retired from the U.S. Air Force, battles the beltway to his job in Alexandria, Virginia as a "computer whiz kid." They all have, according to Becca, ..scads of kids and grandkids, as well as a few great grandkids, and each one is above average and upwards ... natcherly." Their beloved mom Pearl Sewell. who was 95 years old, passed away June 27, 1995. We're looking forward to seeing you Sewell gals (and Calvin too) at our next ex-students reunion in 1996. ELBOW Elbow School has become a very significant part of the Forsan I.S.D. Consolidated with Forsan around 1959 1960, the school has quite a rich history. It was established primarily for the children of the farmers and ranchers in the area. It was named Elbow after the creek nearby which had been so named because of the pronounced curve in its streambed. The school originally was only a one room building located about two miles west of Elbow Creek on what is presently the W. C. Clanton property. The turn of the century saw the Elbow School moved to its present location, about two miles east of Elbow Creek, at the corner of Nichols Road and FM No. 818. The school is pretty much surrounded by farm land except for a nearby church, some old buildings, three teacherages, a bus pad and a gas tank. Before the consolidation, students completing the highest grade there (seventh) could choose to continue their education at either Forsan or Big Spring. Now the school has grades K through 5. Elbow School has made a significant contribution to the Forsan I.S.D.'s climb to excellence. SALUTE We would like to say thanks to the many Forsan Alumni, both men and women, who over the years have served in the U.S. armed services. One particular ex-student who served in WWII comes to mind. R.L. (Roy) Butler and his wife Jackie live in Hobbs, NM, where R.L. operates his commercial art business. (By the way, you will note that R.L. did the cartoon in this newsletter.) They have 2 kids and 6 grandchildren. R.L. had a delay in finishing school at FHS. He went to WWII and soon found himself a POW in the notorious German Stalag 17-B, where he spent the next 18 months. Small world it was, as he soon ran into two friends who were also prisoners there ... the late Horace (Jiggs) Holcombe, who lived in the Lee's Store area and Calvin Sewell, who is mentioned above in the Sewell sisters article. When R.L. returned home after the war, he obtained his high school diploma equivalent in 1945 with the help of then Superintendent Dan McRae. (By the way, after Jiggs' plane was shot down and he was listed as missing in action and presumed dead, a memorial service complete with casket was held for him in the Lees Baptist Church. He later was found alive and returned home. Jiggs was killed in a car accident near Big Spring some years later. Calvin still lives in Hamlin.) R.L. recalls that those were grim Great Depression days, and that there were times when it looked like the family would run out of food with no more in sight. Even so, he says, "time spent in a little two-room house at Chalk holds some fond memories for me. Two and sometimes three sisters ... Vivian, Lima and Juanita...were there and in the evenings one of them would read to my younger brother Hubert and me. We were all very close at that time. Maybe the good old days weren't too bad." WHERE ARE THEY NOW? We received lots of interesting information from the more than 125 individuals responding to our questionnaire during 1994. DEATHS Although we probably do not know about some of the recent deaths of our alumni, teachers and those close to Forsan High, we will at least report those that we do have... Kris D. Allen, 32: February 1995 Clarie Conger, 89: September 1995 Garner Grissam, 77: February 1995 Vera Harris, 97: July 1995 James Hoard, 43: March 1995 Eddy Ray King, 64: December 1995 Mary Lou Overton, 57: June 1995 Jerry Pike, 53: March 1995 Bill H. Smith, 70: July 1995 Woodrow Scudday, 82: June 1995 Joyce Cleavenger Watson: June 1995 AUGUST 3,1996 FORSAN HIGH SCHOOL Three Forsan alumni, all residents of the Chalk area while growing up, were indulging in a little "one-upsmanship" about how poor they were back then. Said Frances Neill Ramsey, "We were so poor we had a possum for a watchdog." Joan Moore Myers responded, "We were so poor we ate our possum." To which Vernon Gandy responded, "We were so poor we skipped breakfast; for lunch we'd have a few dried apples; and for supper we'd drink water and swell up." Well, it's time to shut this thing down (probably already too long as it is). Thanks to all of you who have supplied information for this newslefter. Special thanks is expressed to Darnell Peacock for his advice and consultation. Looking forward to seeing y'all in August ... Yours truly,
